Swisscom’s Journey from Vendor Lock-In to Cloud Native Infrastructure Platform
Swisscom partnered with Kubermatic to launch a sovereign, CNCF-certified Kubernetes Service, migrating from VMware vendor lock-in to a fully open-source, hyperscaler-grade cloud-native platform hosted entirely in Switzerland for enhanced control, security, and agility.

HAMBURG, GERMANY – April 2026 – Kubermatic, the pioneer in enterprise-grade cloud-native solutions, today proudly announced its strategic collaboration with Swisscom, Switzerland’s leading ICT provider, on the official launch of Swisscom’s powerful new Kubernetes Service.
Now generally available to all Swisscom Private Cloud customers, this CNCF-certified platform—built on the Kubermatic Kubernetes Platform (KKP)—delivers a sovereign, high-performance, and feature-rich cloud-native experience that sets a new standard for enterprise Kubernetes in Europe.
Swisscom set an ambitious goal: to build a truly modern, future-proof platform capable of outpacing evolving enterprise demands. Facing challenges around cost efficiency, innovation speed, feature parity with global hyperscalers, and strict Swiss data sovereignty requirements, Swisscom rose to the occasion by creating an entirely new, highly available, open-source-powered platform from the ground up.
Swisscom wanted to evolve its existing “Container Service” into a next-generation Kubernetes platform for its private cloud customers. The aims were to ensure data sovereignty, full control over quality and reliability, and the ability to compete with global hyperscalers.

Key obstacles included:
- High costs and innovation limits due to vendor lock-in from proprietary VMware technology.
- A modernization gap (lacking advanced features like autoscaling and native load balancing).
- Strict Swiss data protection and sovereignty requirements.
- Operational complexity in building and managing a highly available, multi-tenant platform.
In close partnership with Kubermatic, Swisscom deployed the Kubermatic Kubernetes Platform as the technological foundation, bringing advanced automation, seamless provisioning, and intelligent orchestration across its secure Swiss data centers.
The foundation is the Kubermatic Kubernetes Platform (KKP), combined with Baremetal, KubeVirt, and Kube-OVN. Key elements:
- Complete automation of the cluster lifecycle (provisioning, updates, and autoscaling) across two regions and three availability zones.
- CNCF-certified features, including flexible CNI options, enhanced RBAC security, and a native Kubernetes Load Balancer.
- Elimination of proprietary technology in favor of an open, flexible stack.
“Together with Kubermatic, a leading Kubernetes platform provider, we have established a robust and future-ready foundation based on open-source technologies,” said Christian Dietrich, Product Manager for Cloud Services at Swisscom.
“We are thrilled to partner with an industry leader like Swisscom to turn their bold vision into reality,” said Sebastian Scheele, CEO of Kubermatic. “This collaboration perfectly showcases our mission: delivering powerful, open-source solutions that give enterprises and service providers true architectural independence and the ability to build sovereign, high-performance platforms their customers can trust.”
